The Institute of Medical Research (IMR) was established in 1900 and was mainly engaged in the research of diseases such as beri-beri and malaria during its early years. The scope of research has now included both emerging and re-emerging infections, cancers, cardiovascular diseases, allergy and genetic disorders, as well as environmental and herbal medicine. This stamp issue celebrates IMR's centenary in 2000 and features the IMR building in 1901 (30 sen), 1953 (50 sen) and 1976 (RM1.00) respectively.
