2003 marked the 50th anniversary of the Kista Dan, the first of four Dan ships built by the Danish firm J Lauritzen for Arctic and Antarctic exploration and research. This stamp issue features four Dan ships, with different phases of the ships' voyages – Kista Dan in the Southern Ocean (50c), Magga Dan reaching the pack ice (50c), Thala Dan among icebergs (AU$1.00) and Nella Dan anchored in the Antarctic.
