2004 marked the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Mawson Station in the Antarctic. It is the oldest continuously operating station inside the Antarctic circle. The stamps in this issue feature the naming ceremony which took place on 13 Feb 1954 (50c), a contemporary view of Mawson Station (50c), a living caravan with de Havilland Beaver aircraft in the background (AU$1.00) and the Auster Emperor Penguin Rookery, located approximately 6.5 km from Mawson Station (AU$1.45).
