Malaysia is bestowed with 180 species of snakes, of which 142 species are found in Peninsular Malaysia. Of the 142 species, only 39 species are poisonous. Ecologically, snakes play a major role in keeping the rodent population in check as most snakes feed on rats. The four snake species featured in this stamp issue are the Reticulated Python (30 sen), Royal Tree Snake (30 sen), Malayan Krait (50 sen) and the Blue Malaysian Coral Snake (RM1.00).
