Queen Elizabeth II's 1954 tour to Australia was noteworthy on several counts. It had been twenty years since the previous royal tour. It was also the first royal tour to Australia by a reigning monarch. The Queen arrived in Australia in Sydney and departed the country two months later from Fremantle. The stamp in this issue uses Dorothy Wilding's portrait of the Queen used in the 1954 stamp issued to commemorate this event. The stamp is printed using a deep, regal purple that evokes the printing of the 1954 intaglio stamp.
