Since the establishment of the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) in 1948, aircraft have played an important role in reconnaissance and photography, support for ground and ice parties, and scientific measurements. The first hangar built in the AAT was constructed at Mawson in 1956. This stamp issue features some of the aircrafts used by AAD – Hughes 500 Helicopter (50c), De Havilland DHC-2 Beaver (50c), Pilatus PC-6 Porter (AU$1.00) and Douglas DC-3/Dakota C-47 (AU$1.45).
