There are about 599 islands, reefs and rocks in Malaysia's water based on the 1979 Malaysia New Map. Important as it is in terms of strategic and national security, the islands and reefs are also rich with diverse marine ecosystem. The islands and reefs in the South China Sea as featured in this stamp issue are the Erica Reef (30 sen), Mariveles Reef (30 sen), Investigator Reef (RM1.00) and the Swallow Island (RM1.00). The fifth, being the Ardasier Reef, is issued separately as a RM2.00 stamp in the miniature sheet format.
