There are hundreds of species of reptiles in Malaysia – major groups being crocodiles, turtles, snakes, and lizards. All reptiles are cold-blooded, which is why they warm themselves in the sun and have bodies covered in dry, horny scales. The size of reptiles can range from the very tiniest of lizards to crocodiles that are several metres long. This stamp issue features some of the rare reptiles in Malaysia, namely the Rough-necked Monitor (30 sen), Harlequin Monitor (30 sen), Great Anghehead Lizard (50 sen) and the Estuarine Crocodile (RM1.00).
