Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) was established on 22 Jun 1956 in Johor Bahru as a department under the Ministry of Education. It was established to develop the Malay language as the national and official language as the nation was moving towards independence. DBP was relocated from Bukit Timbalan, Johor Bahru to Jalan Young, Kuala Lumpur in 1957, before moving to Jalan Lapangan Terbang Lama (now known as Jalan Dewan Bahasa) five years later. The stamps in this issue, to commemorate DBP's 50th anniversary in 2006, feature the emblem of DBP (50 sen), a mural on the facade of DBP's Balai Budaya Tun Syed Nasir (50 sen) and books and electronic media, reflecting DBP's progress in the era information and communication technology in the publishing industry (RM1.00).
