"Good evening and welcome to television." – Bruce Gyngell, 16 Sep 1956. The historical day when the Australian public was introduced to this remarkable new broadcast medium – the television. Although the idea of television had been around in Europe and America for decades, the war has curtailed television's up-take in Australia. This stamp issue celebrates 50 years of television in Australia in 2006. Each of the stamps features a programme from across the five decades of Australian television, representing different genres from across different free-to-air networks – In Melbourne Tonight (1957-1971), Homicide (1964-1977), Dateline (1984), Neighbours (1985) and Kath & Kim (2002).
