4 Oct 1957, the first man-made satellite orbited Earth and so began the space race between the USSR and the USA. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of mankind's exploration of space, also in conjunction with 2007 Stamp Collecting Month, Australia Post released a set of stamps capturing the milestones reached on space exploration. The stamps feature the Sputnik 1 launched by the USSR in 1957 (50c), the first space walk by Alexey Leonov in 1965 (50c), the first moon walk by Neil Armstrong in 1969 (50c), the Voyager launched by NASA in 1977 (50c), the International Space Station launched in 1998 (50c) as well as the Hubble Space Telescope launched in 1990 (AU$1.00).
