Christmas Island became an Australian Territory on 1 Oct 1958. This day is commemorated on the island as Territory Day. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Christmas Island as an Australian Territory in 2008, this stamp issue of five stamps features some of the flora and fauna found in the island – the Red Crab (50c), Abbott's Booby (50c) and CI Spleenwort (50c); as well as seal of the Union of Christmas Island Workers, which was formed in 1975 (AU$1.45) and the official territory flag of Christmas Island, which features the Golden Bosunbird and the Southern Cross (AU$2.45).
