The bird population of Cocos (Keeling) Islands can be classified as endemic – birds that breed on the island; migratory non-breeding visitors as well as vagrants – irregular visiting birds that periodically "drop in" on their migratory route. This stamp issue features four of the vagrant or visiting birds to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands – the Back-winged Stilt (50c), Chinese Pond Heron (50c), White-breasted Waterhen (AU$1.00) and the Saunders' Tern (AU$1.45).
