Japan Post was a government-owned corporation in Japan from 2003 to 2007, offering postal and package delivery services, banking services, and life insurance. On 1 Oct 2007, Japan Post was privatised following a fierce political debate that was settled by the general election of 2005. Japan Post was split into three companies in 2007, intending to be fully privatised by 2017. This was however, put on hold in 2010. This stamp issue, to commemorate the establishment of Japan Post Corporation in 2007, features Baron Maejima Hisoka, founder of the Japanese Postal System and the Dragon Stamp, being the first stamp issued in 1871.
