Australia's involvement in the Antarctic dates back to the late 19th century. Its understanding of the region has come a long way since Mawson expedition of 1911. The Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) has used results of scientific study and research in Antarctica to regulate fishing as well as to decide on necessary conservation measures since 1980. The style of the drawing used in the design of this set of stamps is intended to be reminiscent of 19th century scientific specimen sketches. These beautifully detailed stamps feature the Mackerel Icefish (50c), Lanternfish (50c), Eaton's Skate (AU$1.00) and the Patagonian Toothfish (AU$1.00).
