Maritime culture flourished around Australia's coasts and harbours during the 19th century. The growth in maritime traffic was, not surprisingly, accompanied by an increase in the number of shipwrecks. This stamp issue features three of the most calamitous shipwrecks of the 19th century, each with a remarkable tale of loss and survival – the Admella shipwreck on 6 Aug 1859 (50c), the Loch Ard shipwreck on 1 Jun 1878 (AU$1.00) and the Dunbar shipwreck on 20 Aug 1857 (AU$2.00).
