The principle of "form follows function" was a touchstone for modernist architects. This stamp issue looks at modernist architecture in Australia, featuring some of the remarkable buildings that this style has brought to their urban landscapes – the former ICI House in Melbourne (50c), the Academy of Science in Canberra (50c), the Council House in Perth (AU$1.00) and the Sydney Opera House (AU$2.45). With their clean lines, bold shapes and new materials, these buildings represented a real departure in form and functionality from the buildings of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
