The Cocos (Keeling) Islands comprise two tropical coral atolls situated in the remote Indian Ocean, approximately 2,770 km northwest of Perth. There are over 600 known species of shells around the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, 97 percent of which come from the Pacific Ocean and three percent from the Indian Ocean. Many are inhabited by beautiful and unusual living creatures. The living shells featured in this stamp issue are the Oriental Moonsnail (50c), Pearly Nautilus (50c), Partridge Tun (AU$1.00) and the Giant Clam (AU$1.45).
