World Youth Day is the largest youth event in the world, and Australia held the 2008 event in Sydney from 15 to 20 Jul 2008. The event aims to gather young people from around the world to celebrate and learn about the Catholic faith, also to build bridges of friendship and hope between people and cultures. World Youth Day 2008 marked the first visit to Australia by Pope Benedict XVI. This special stamp issue by Australia Post, to commemorate this event, features the Pope greeting the people during Mass (50c), the Pope holding a crosier (AU$1.35) and the Pope giving blessing (AU$2.00).
