Australia Post last stamp issue in 2008 celebrates Australia's favourite local films, as voted for in a competition jointly organised by Australia Post and the Australian Film Institute (AFI). Australian films are now recognised nationally and internationally, a far cry from the situation in 1958 when Australian feature film production had fallen to an all-time low. Five Australian films are featured in this stamp issue, four presenting a diverse picture of their culture – The Adventures of Priscilla, The Castle, Muriel's Wedding and Lantana; while Gallipoli explored Australia's past, its commemoration of the great battle of World War I.
