Fireflies are beetles and are known locally in Malaysia as kelip-kelip, kunang-kunang or api-api. In Malaysia, there are many types of fireflies, which can be differentiated by attributes such as their flash pattern, colour of the light, behaviour, size, colour and shape of sexes, larvae and habitat. There are also daytime fireflies, which do not produce light at all, or some female fireflies that do not even fly. Interesting facts to know. Four species of fireflies are featured in this stamp issue – Pteroptyx bearni (30 sen), Pteroptyx valida (30 sen), Lychnuris sp. (50 sen) and Diaphanes sp. (50 sen).
