Persekutuan Tanah Melayu (Federation of Malaya) was a federation of eleven states, which was made up of nine Malay states and two British Straits Settlements. The Federation of Malaya gained independence from British colonial rule on 31 Aug 1957; and Hari Merdeka (Independence Day), the national day of Malaysia commemorating the independence, is celebrated each year on 31 Aug. Celebrating 57 years of independence in 2014, the single stamp in this issue features adult-child's hand holding in the middle, with the flag of Malaysia on the left, a newspaper cutting reporting the independence of Malaya on the right and the National Monument on middle top of the stamp.
