This stamp issue by Pos Malaysia, in conjunction with Year of the Snake 2013 (whereby the "snake" stamp is only available in the miniature sheet), aims to increase public knowledge that exotic animals can be made pets, some require a license to keep and some don't. In line with the changing times, more people are interested to keep exotic pets which come in a variety of shapes and size such as snakes, spiders, sugar glider, pygmy hedgehog and green iguana. Keeping an exotic animal as a pet requires some special needs, such as special housing, live food, and special medical care. The exotic pets featured in this stamp issue are the African Pygmy Hedgehog (60 sen), Green Iguana (80 sen) and the Sugar Glider (RM1.00).
