Birds is a popular theme for stamps worldwide; Pos Malaysia released its first bird-themed stamps in 1965. This 13th bird-themed stamp issue by Pos Malaysia features the uniqueness of herons and bitterns. Herons are freshwater and coastal birds belonging to the family Ardeidae. There are 64 recognised species worldwide, but only the Botaurus and Ixobrychus genera are referred to as bitterns. Herons and bitterns are chosen in this issue to increase public awareness and promote the conservation of these birds and their habitats. The species featured in this stamp issue are the Black-crowned Night Heron (60 sen), Little Heron, also known as the Striated Heron (70 sen) and the Grey Heron (80 sen).
