Pecking their way onto stamps, this first stamp for 2013 by Pos Malaysia features some of the woodpecker species found in Malaysia. Woodpeckers belong to the Picidae family of the Piciformes order, and are found worldwide, except for Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Madagascar and the extreme polar regions. They are easily recognisable by their unique behaviour of pecking vertically on trees. They have specially adapted feet and tail feathers which enable them to cling to tree trunks. The woodpecker species featured in this stamp issue are the Banded Woodpecker (60 sen), Common Flameback Woodpecker (80 sen) and the Lesser Yellownape Woodpecker (RM1.00).
