The movement of mail from and into the Straits Settlements (made up of Penang, Malacca and Singapore) were originally handed privately by ships. The postal services were later regularised under the control of the British East India Company. In 1854, postage stamps were introduced for usage in the Straits Settlements, which were actually contemporary stamps issued for India. After becoming a Crown Colony, the Straits Settlements issued their own stamps, released on 1 Sep 1867. 2017 marks the 150th anniversary since the first stamps were issued in Straits Settlements. This set of stamps, to commemorate this milestone, consists of three stamps – each featuring three Straits Settlements stamps dating back to 1896 and carrying the portrait of Queen Victoria, who ruled Britain from 1837 to 1901.
