2017 marks 50 years of National Service (NS) in Singapore. In 1967, NS was introduced to fulfill the critical need of defending a young nation. 50 years later, NS is an established national institution and a rite of passage for all Singaporeans. This NS50 stamp issue is launched to coincide with the passing of the National Service (Amendment) Bill and the registration of the first batch of full-time National Servicemen in 1967. The stamps feature key NS milestone in Singapore's history – the passing of the National Service Bill in Parliament on 14 Mar 1967 (1st Local); the first batches of full-time National Servicemen into the Singapore Armed Forces in 1967 (1st Local), the Singapore Police Force in 1975 (70c) and the Singapore Civil Defense Force in 1981 (90c); as well as the introduction of the Open Mobilisation System in 1985 (S$1.30).
