Nineteenth-century Singapore was a vibrant commercial centre. However, beneath the prosperity, Singapore remained undeveloped in many areas including education. There was little public demand for formal education and the government in British India at that time was unwilling to channel money into developing education, much less the education of girls. This situation took a change with the coming of the western missionaries. Their zeal and compassion saw the setting up of schools that not only rescued girls from a life of servitude but also inculcated spiritualism and equipped them with an array of practical skills. This stamp issue features the early education and various skills that girls received in Singapore – cooking (1st Local), sewing (70c), reading (90c) and writing (S$1.30).
