Great strides were made in the development of transport in the industrialised world in the 19th century. In Singapore too, land transportation had made significant progress. In three decades, the mode of transportation shifted from man-drawn transport to horse-drawn carriages and thence in 1890's to motorised transport. This definitive stamp series features a wide range of transportation used in Singapore. The low-value definitive stamps were issued on 19 Mar 1997, while the high-value definitive stamps were issued on 23 Apr 1997. The various types of land transportation featured in the low-value definitive stamps include the Bullock Cart (5c), Bicycle (20c), Jinrickshaw (22c), Electric Tram (30c), Trolley Bus (35c), Trishaw (40c), Vintage Car (50c), Horse-drawn Carriage (60c) and the Fire Engine (70c). The stamps in this issue were designed with assistance from the National Archives of Singapore and the Singapore Civil Defence force.
