Documented Malayan Veterinary Services first began with the appointment of a British Veterinary Officer in Penang in 1888. Following this, first appointments of Veterinary Surgeons to various states were made throughout the years. The earliest roles of the Veterinary Services were focused on the control and treatment of infectious diseases and prevention of cruelty to animals. The Department continues to develop and expand – by the end of 1962, it was given total responsibility for livestock production in the nation. Celebrating more than a centenary of Veterinary Services in 1994, this stamp issue aims to increase public awareness of the role and contributions of the Veterinary profession and the animal industry to the nation, as illustrated in the stamp design.
