The Art Deco architectural style has its roots in Paris from the early 1900s, a style that features clean lines, rectangular forms, and no decoration on the facades, which is a departure from the prevailing art nouveau style of that time. In Singapore, many buildings featuring the Art Deco style were built between the 1930s and 1950s, during a very exciting time in Singapore and bore witness to many social, cultural and technological progress. Many of them, including those featured in this stamp issue, were subsequently accorded conservation status by the Urban Redevelopment Authority. The six buildings honoured in this stamp issue are The Fullerton Waterboat House near the Merlion Park (1st Local), Maxwell Chambers in Tanjong Pagar (60c), 9 Norris Road in Little India (70c), 36/38 Armenian Street near City Hall (90c), 13 Pahang Street near Kampong Glam (S$1.15), and 79 Circular Road near Boat Quay (S$1.50).
