The 1978 FIFA World Cup, also known as Argentina '78, was held in Argentina from 1 to 25 Jun 1978. The Cup was won by the host nation, Argentina, who defeated the Netherlands 3–1 in the final, after extra time. This win was the first World Cup title for Argentina, who became the fifth team (after Uruguay, Italy, England and West Germany) to be both hosts and world champions and the third South American team to win a World Cup.

The stamp affixed on the commemorative cover above is from one of the stamps issued in Feb 1978 to commemorate this international sporting event. The stamp features the official logo of the game, which is based on President Juan PerĂ³n's signature gesture – a salute to the crowd with both arms extended above his head. The official ball, the Adidas Tango, is featured on the cover. The postmark indicated the scores from the final, above cancellation date of 25 Jun 1978, the day when Argentina won the Cup.
