1985 was designated as the International Youth Year by the United Nations, with the themes "Participation, Development, Peace". It brought to focus the "silent emergency" faced by millions of youth of ages 15-24 then, caught in the wedge of societal crisis and change. The year brought to the fore, the hopes and problems of the young in the world and called for youth to participate in solutions towards their own problems. The themes of the year are depicted on the three stamps issued by Singapore Post to commemorate this international year. The badges/emblems of some of the major youth organisations in Singapore are featured in the 10c stamp, the development and nurturing of the young sapling is featured in the 75c stamp while the S$1.00 stamp features youth with hands raised in harmony, within the international symbol of peace and hope – the dove.
