Royal Brunei Airlines was founded in 1974 and is wholly owned by the government of Brunei. By the close of 1975, Royal Brunei Airlines had carried 36,000 passengers between Bandar Seri Begawan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. During the years which followed, the routes were expanded to Manila and Bangkok in 1977, Kuala Lumpur in 1982, Darwin in 1983, Jakarta in 1984, Taipei in 1986, Dubai in 1988, Frankfurt and London Gatwick in 1990 as well as London Heathrow in 1991. Abu Dhabi, Bali, Bahrain, Zurich, Beijing and Cairo were added to the network in 1993. This stamp issue celebrates the 20th anniversary of Royal Brunei Airlines in 1994. In celebrating this milestone, Royal Brunei also inaugurated its services to Brisbane in 1994.
