On 2 Mar 1989, the 146th Conference of Rulers in Malaysia elected His Majesty, Sultan Azlan Shah Muhibbuddin Shah as the 9th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia for a term of five years from 26 Apr 1989 to 25 Apr 1994. The taking of the oath of office and the signing of the Instrument of Office was held at Istana Negara on 26 Apr 1989. His Majesty received his early education at the Government English School (Sultan Yussuf School) in his hometown, Batu Gajah; and subsequently at the Malay College, Kuala Kangsar. His Majesty proceeded to England for his higher education where he graduated with a Degree in Law (LLB) from the University of Nottingham and was called to the English Bar by the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn, London. Commemorating the installation of His Majesty as the 9th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, this stamp issue by Pos Malaysia features portrait of His Majesty Sultan Azlan Shah in all three stamps in the issue.
