21 Jul 1992, Barcelona, Spain – Malaysia won the bid to host the XVI Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur in 1998; the first time in the history that the Commonwealth Games would be held in an Asian member nation. Sukom Ninety Eight Berhad (Sukom) was entrusted with the mission to organise the Games. Malaysians in both public and private sectors worked together with Sukom with a single aim to stage the best ever Commonwealth Games. The stamps in this pre-issue on the XVI Commonwealth Games show an outline map of Malaysia against the globe with the XVI Commonwealth Games logo (first RM1.00 stamp) and Wira, the official mascot of the Games (second RM1.00 stamp). The gutter depicts the four new sports – cricket, hockey, netball and rugby; all of which being introduced for the first time in the Games to be held in Kuala Lumpur.
