The idea to build a rail transit system surfaced in Singapore in the 1970s. In 1987, Singapore's first mass rapid transit (MRT) system began its inaugural service with just five stations along the North-South Line – Yio Chu Kang, Ang Mo Kio, Bishan, Braddell and Toa Payoh. Within a year, 20 more stations were added to the network and a direct service existed between Yishun and Lakeside stations, linking up Central Singapore to Jurong in the west by the end of 1988. This stamp issue commemorates the official launch of the MRT system on 12 Mar 1988, and the stamps feature the entire network (10c), including both aboveground/elevated section (50c) and underground section (S$1.00) of the network.
