Tiger is the third sign of the Chinese zodiac. In Chinese culture, Tigers are regarded as the guardians of children, and infants wear shoes and hats with tiger designs to protect against evil spirits. Those born in the Year of the Tiger are believed to be competitive and optimistic by nature, and potentially skilled leaders. The two stamps in this issue feature stylised illustrations of this courageous creature, with the Chinese text for "Year of the Tiger" in gold foil.
