Sarawak's State Legislative Assembly is the oldest legislature in Malaysia. It was formed by Charles Brooke, the Rajah Muda under the orders of James Brooke, then the Rajah of Sarawak. The General Council was first convened on 8 Sep 1867. In 1903, General Council was renamed Council Negri and was once again renamed the State Legislative Assembly in 1976. The Sarawak State Legislative Assembly had entered three important phases, namely the Brooke Dynasty (the Kingdom of Sarawak), followed by the British Colonial period until Sarawak achieved its independence on 22 Jul 1963 and formed the Federation of Malaysia on 16 Sep 1963.
