The Penny Black was the world's first adhesive postage stamp issued in Britain on 6 May 1840 to be used in a public postal system. The stamp features the profile of Queen Victoria, which was based on the engraved portrait medallion of the young Queen. The word "POSTAGE" appeared at the top of the stamp and "ONE PENNY" at the bottom, indicating the amount that had been prepaid for the transmission of the letter to which it was affixed. The background consisted of finely engraved engine turnings and as the name suggests, the stamp was printed in black ink. The size of the Penny Black stamp was approximately 19 x 22 mm. The Two Pence Blue issued 2 days after the Penny Black stamp was a replica design except for the denomination and the colour blue. Commemorating 175th anniversary of Penny Black, the single stamp in this issue features both Penny Black and Two Pence Blue.
