Education has always played an important role in the development of Singapore. Higher education in Singapore had its humble beginnings in 1905 with the establishment of the Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States Government Medical School, which was subsequently renamed the King Edward VII College of Medicine. It merged with Raffles College to form the University of Malaya in 1949, with its Singapore's division became the University of Singapore in 1962. It merged with Nanyang University on 8 Aug 1980 to form the National University of Singapore (NUS). This stamp issue by Singapore Post celebrates 100 years of university education in Singapore in 2005, with the four stamps in the issue highlighting NUS's contributions to education, research and cultural development, reinforcing its role as a global knowledge hub.
