The Singapore River occupies an important place in the history of Singapore. Following the establishment of a British trading post on the island in 1819, Singapore's free port status and strategic location attracted trade and people from the region and beyond. This stamp issue showcases some early artistic impressions of Singapore River, from the National Library Board's rare book collections at the National Library. Offering a glimpse into the vibrant life and cultural diversity of early settlers, the four stamps in this issue feature a detailed illustration of the Singapore River with traditional wooden boats and bustling trade activity (80c), shophouses and godowns along the riverbank (90c), panoramic view of the river with merchants and workers (S$1.15) as well as scenic composition of the river framed by greenery and colonial-era structures (S$1.50).
