Paddington Bear is one of the most enduring and beloved figures in British children's literature. Created by author Michael Bond, the character is instantly recognisable for his old hat, duffel coat, battered suitcase, and fondness for marmalade sandwiches. The little bear made his first appearance on 13 Oct 1958, in the children's book A Bear Called Paddington. Celebrating 65 years of Paddington Bear, this stamp issue by Royal Mail in 2023 consists of 10 stamps, with six in the regular set and four stamps presented in a miniature sheet. Depicting scenes from the 1970s BBC animated television series of Paddington, created and directed by Ivor Wood, the stamp designs in the miniature sheet include:
- 1st Class – Paddington reaching for a marmalade sandwich
- 1st Class – Paddington and Mr. Gruber sharing elevenses
- £2.00 – Paddington with the Brown family at breakfast
- £2.00 – Paddington baking
Compared to the regular set's standalone cartoon scenes, the miniature sheet is more story-driven and character-oriented. The inclusion of supporting figures such as Mr. Gruber and the Brown family reinforces Paddington's role within a broader social and narrative context.
