The Singapore Volunteer Artillery (SVA) was first established on 22 Feb 1888. Commemorating the Singapore Artillery Centenary in 1988, this stamp issue consists of four stamps, with the designs featuring various historical and modern artillery scenes – Gunners of a Gun Detachment operating the 155 Gun Howitzer (10c); soldiers with a 25 Pounder Gun in a traditional ceremonial gun salute pose at the Padang (35c); soldier with a 4.5 inch Howitzer in a ceremonial gun salute pose (50c); and a member of the Maxim Gun Detachment with a .405 Maxim Gun (S$1.00). Adding historical context to the scenes portrayed, the background elements in the designs include buildings or landscapes such as Khatib Camp (10c), the Padang (35c), the Singapore Cricket Club (50c) and the Drill Hall at Fort Fullerton Site (S$1.00).
