It is thought that cats were first domesticated around 10,000 years ago in the Middle East. This coincided with the establishment of settlements and farming, and the subsequent rise of the rodent. Cats are the most enigmatic of domestic pets, in part enchanting, almost always independent and often fiercely discerning in who they choose to engage with. They can seem contrary and have usually carved out the best in life. Cats do exactly as they please, spending much of their time asleep in the most comfortable spot or sauntering around the neighbourhood at leisure. They will not be trained unless it suits them – and while you might think you own your cat, rest assured, the cat owns you! This stamp issue by Royal Mail features eight breeds of cat – Siamese, Ginger Cat, Maine Coon and Bengal (first row of stamps) as well as Tabby, British Shorthair, Black-and-white Cat and Tabby-and-white Cat (second row of stamps). Being a cat lover, I was sold when I saw this stamp issue. Without a second thought, it was added to my shopping cart.
