The Mesozoic Era, or the "Age of the Dinosaurs" as it is commonly known, lasted from 252 to 66 million years ago and it comprises, in order from oldest to youngest, the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods. This stamp issue by Royal Mail highlights the extraordinary diversity of prehistoric life, ranging from giant predators and armoured herbivores to flying pterosaurs and marine reptiles of this era. Through detailed reconstructions and dynamic compositions, the stamps in this issue bring the prehistoric world to life through eight vividly illustrated stamps, featuring the Tyrannosaurus, Coloborhynchus, Stegosaurus and Megalosaurus (first row of stamps) as well as Triceratops, Iguanodon, Diplodocus and Cryptoclidus (second row of stamps). Particularly notable is the inclusion of Megalosaurus, the first dinosaur to be scientifically described, and Iguanodon, one of the most important dinosaurs in the history of palaeontology.
