More than just a road across the Johor Strait, the Causeway has served for a century as a powerful symbol of the close ties between Singapore and Malaysia. The history of the Causeway began in 1919 when construction commenced to span the 1.05-kilometre Johor Strait. Built by about 2,000 workers using stone from Pulau Ubin and Bukit Timah quarries, the structure was completed at a cost of approximately 17 million Straits dollars and officially opened in June 1924. The Causeway hosts a railway track, wide roads and a water pipeline – and some 350,000 people who cross it each day. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Causeway in 2024, this joint stamp issue between Singapore Post and Pos Malaysia illustrates the evolution of the Causeway from its opening in 1924 to the modern crossing of today, highlighting its role as both a historical landmark and a gateway between the two countries.
