A city steeped in royal heritage and history, Alor Setar took centre stage in this 1990 stamp issue that commemorates the 250th Anniversary of Alor Setar. Founded in 1740 by Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin II, Alor Setar grew into the royal capital of Kedah and remains one of Malaysia's oldest cities. With detailed illustrations and vibrant colours, the stamps highlight some of the city's most iconic landmarks and scenic views – a panoramic view of Alor Setar, capturing the city's blend of greenery, waterways, and urban development (20 sen), the distinctive Alor Setar Tower Clock building, a well-known landmark that reflects the city's colonial-era architecture (40 sen) and another historic structure associated with Alor Setar's cultural and architectural heritage (RM1.00).
1990 was also Visit Malaysia Year – the inclusion of the campaign logo on the stamps highlighted Alor Setar's rich historical heritage and promoted the city as an important destination for visitors exploring Malaysia's royal and cultural past.
