Often overshadowed by iconic traditional Malay weapons such as the keris and spear, Malay traditional firearms represent an equally fascinating chapter of the region's military and heritage. Presenting these firearms in intricate detail, highlighting the metalwork and craftsmanship that made them important cultural artefacts as well as weapons, the two regular stamps in this issue by Pos Malaysia feature the Pemuras, a large-calibre handgun that showcases the ingenuity and craftsmanship of traditional Malay gunsmiths (60 sen) and the Istinggar (also known as Senapang Istinggar or Satingga), a long-barrelled light rifle widely used throughout the Malay Archipelago and is valued for its effectiveness in warfare and defence (RM1.50). This stamp issue offers a fresh perspective on Malay heritage, revealing that early Malay civilisations were not only masters of edged weapons but were also adept in the use and development of firearms.
