Both governments of Malaysia and China have designated 2014 as the "Friendship Year" to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations, which was formally established when Malaysia's second Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, signed a joint communique with China on 31 May 1974, during his visit to China.
